Scope of the Works
The Óshlíd road tunnel has been built as an avalanches and landslides protection project. The 5.2 km long double lane tunnel lies between Bolungarvík and Hnífsdalur in the Icelandic Westfjords.
The main parts of the project consist of:
- 5’156 m long (54 m²) double lane road tunnel,
turning bays and tunnel widenings
- 10’450 m of road
- 2 bridges
Work description
Underground excavation, rock support and grouting work
- Excavation methods: drill & blast
- Excavated length: 5’156 m
- Excavated Volume: 300’000 m³
- Standard rock support: shotcrete (17’200 m³) and systematic rock bolts (18’400 pcs)
- Additional rock support: spiling bolts, lattice girders and reinforced shotcrete arches
Underground water and frost protection work
- PE-foam & shotcrete lining: 29’000 m²
Surface- and groundwork
- Pre-cut excavation
- Roadwork: 10’450 m
- Fresh water and drainage system
- Installation of cables pipes
- One avalanche dam
Concrete work
- 2 technical buildings
- Portals: 129 m and 135 m
- Bridges: 32 m and 8 m (prestressed)
Electrical work
- Earthing system
- Electro mechanical installations and equipment (lights, signalisation, ventilation fans)
Geology
- Basalt with intersections of sedimentary layers (silt- stone)
